Finance Lease
for Business Cars and Vans
BUSINESS VEHICLE FUNDING
Finance Lease can help your business access the cars and commercial vehicles it needs without paying the full purchase price upfront. At Rainford Fleet Solutions, we help you understand the payment structure, ongoing responsibilities and potential end-of-agreement costs—so you can choose funding that supports your business, not simply the lowest monthly rental.
Vehicle funding built around your business—with clear end-of-agreement responsibilities
Discuss your vehicle requirements
What is Finance Lease?
Finance Lease is a rental agreement between your business and a finance provider. The provider buys and owns the vehicle, while your business pays to use it over an agreed period. Unlike Business Contract Hire, your business generally carries the financial risk associated with the vehicle’s eventual sale value. Depending on the agreement, you may receive a share of the sale proceeds as a rebate of rentals, but you may also have to cover a shortfall. Finance Lease is not normally a route to owning the vehicle yourself.
How are the payments structured?
An initial rental is paid at the start of the agreement. This is an upfront rental payment—not a refundable security deposit or a payment towards ownership. Compare the initial rental, subsequent payments and any final rental together.
You make regular rentals throughout the agreed primary term. The right term should reflect how long you expect to need the vehicle, how intensively it will be used and your replacement plans.
Finance Lease can include a balloon, where part of the amount payable is deferred to a larger final rental, or a fully amortising structure where the financed cost is recovered through the rentals during the primary period. A balloon is a contractual payment obligation, not a guaranteed future vehicle value.
VAT and tax considerations
VAT recovery depends on the vehicle, its use and your business’s VAT position.
For a qualifying leased car available for private use, VAT-registered businesses are normally restricted to recovering 50% of the VAT on the rental, subject to the usual recovery rules. Commercial vehicles are treated differently, and full recovery should not be assumed without checking business use and eligibility.
With or without a balloon payment
Finance Lease commonly takes one of two forms:
With a balloon: part of the amount payable is deferred to a larger final rental, reducing the regular rentals compared with an otherwise equivalent structure without that deferral.
Fully amortising: the vehicle’s financed cost is recovered through the rentals during the primary period, rather than leaving a substantial final balloon.
A balloon is a contractual payment obligation, not a guaranteed future vehicle value. Its affordability needs to be considered from the outset.
Ownership, mileage and maintenance
The finance provider remains the legal owner. Paying the initial rental, regular rentals or final balloon does not automatically transfer ownership to your business. Where the vehicle is sold, disposal must follow the funder’s rules.
Finance Lease should not be treated as unlimited mileage with no consequences. Higher mileage, damage and poor condition can reduce the vehicle’s sale price, which can reduce your rebate or increase a shortfall.
Maintenance is not automatically included simply because a vehicle is leased. Before proceeding, confirm servicing, repairs, tyres, MOT, insurance, breakdown support, vehicle tax and any restrictions on signwriting or specialist equipment.
What happens at the end?
Your options depend on the agreement and must be confirmed before you commit. The vehicle may be sold through an approved disposal process. The funder receives the proceeds and calculates the final position, including outstanding amounts, fees and any rebate due.
Where a balloon remains, a sale above that amount may generate a rebate, subject to the contractual calculation and deductions. A sale below it can leave your business responsible for the difference. Some agreements allow continued use through a secondary rental period or extension, but this is not automatic ownership.
Is Finance Lease right for your business?
Consider whether spreading vehicle expenditure supports your cash flow, whether you are comfortable accepting uncertainty over the eventual sale value, and whether your business can cover a potential final-payment shortfall. If a straightforward return arrangement is your priority, ask us to compare Business Contract Hire. If ownership matters, ask about purchase-based alternatives.
VAT recovery, tax deductions and accounting treatment depend on the vehicle, its use and your business’s circumstances. Ask your accountant to confirm the position before proceeding; we can provide the funding information they need to assess the proposal.
